A highway with driveways on it

Vamo runs along the Tamiami Trail in the south of the county, between Gulf Gate and Osprey, hemmed in by Little Sarasota Bay on one side. The Trail through here has long stretches without a signal, which means traffic settles into highway speeds and then encounters residential driveways, side roads and the entrances to waterfront communities.

I am David Harris and I have represented injured people across Sarasota County since 2003. The crashes I handle in Vamo are mostly a product of that mismatch: a vehicle turning or emerging at low speed into a lane carrying traffic at fifty.

Turning across the Trail

A driver turning left across the Trail has to cross multiple lanes, judging oncoming traffic that is often moving faster than the posted limit. Florida places the duty to yield on that turning driver under section 316.122, so an insurer begins from the position that their insured is protected.

The counter-argument is speed, and it is frequently a real one. A driver who was significantly over the limit contributed to a crash they would otherwise have avoided, and since 2023 Florida's modified comparative rule under section 768.81 apportions accordingly. Above fifty percent a claim recovers nothing; below it, recovery reduces by the assigned share.

Proving the speed side of that argument means physical evidence and, increasingly, the vehicle's own event data recorder. Both require someone to ask for them early.

Seasonal traffic and out-of-state policies

The south county corridor fills up between January and April. A share of the drivers involved in Vamo crashes are seasonal residents or visitors, which introduces an out-of-state policy, sometimes a rental company, and a driver who has left Florida by the time your injuries have declared themselves.

It also means the other driver may carry no coverage at all, which Florida does not require. When that happens the claim runs on your own uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage instead. It is included by default on Florida policies unless rejected in writing, so it is worth checking whether you rejected it.

Two deadlines that start on the day of the crash

Section 627.736 of the Florida Statutes conditions your benefits on receiving initial medical treatment within fourteen days. Those benefits pay your first medical bills regardless of who was at fault, and missing the window removes them.

Section 316.066 makes the crash report confidential for sixty days after filing, releasing it in that period only to the people involved and their representatives. Vamo is unincorporated, so the report is the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office's unless the crash was on a state road worked by the Florida Highway Patrol.

Sarasota Memorial, the county's only trauma programme, is north of Vamo up the Trail. For lesser injuries any urgent care or your own doctor starts the fourteen-day clock. This is not medical advice.
