A phrase worth unpacking
Every firm says it serves Sarasota County. It is the kind of line that means nothing until somebody spells out what the county actually requires of a lawyer working in it.
So here is the specific version, from someone who has done it since 2003.
Four agencies, and knowing which one you need
Where your crash happened decides who investigated it, and people lose a fortnight finding that out.
- The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office works the unincorporated county, which is most of it: Bee Ridge, Gulf Gate, Palmer Ranch, Fruitville, Vamo, Lake Sarasota
- Sarasota Police work crashes inside the city limits, a boundary that runs through neighbourhoods rather than around them
- The Florida Highway Patrol works Interstate 75 and the state roads, which includes Clark Road as State Road 72
- Longboat Key has its own department, covering a barrier island that spans two counties
Records live in different places accordingly. Sheriff's Office reports come through the Criminal Justice Center on Ringling Boulevard; the others each have their own process.
One trauma centre
Sarasota Memorial is the only trauma programme in the county. If your crash was serious, that is where you went, and that is where the records that decide the medical side of your claim were created.
That concentration is useful. It means the treating specialists in a serious injury file are a relatively small and knowable group, and the records arrive in a format I have read several hundred times.
One courthouse, and a circuit that matters
Civil cases here sit in Florida's Twelfth Judicial Circuit. Practically, that means local procedure, local scheduling, and knowing which motions are worth filing in front of which judge. None of that is glamorous and all of it affects how long a case takes.
A population that is not constant
This is the thing about the county that genuinely changes claims. From roughly January through April the roads carry a different mix of people: seasonal residents, visitors, rental cars, drivers insured under another state's rules and rental policies, and a good many people navigating a road for the first time.
It has practical consequences for a claim:
- The at-faultdriver may be out of state before your symptoms have fully declared themselves
- Their policy may be written to another state's rules, which changes what is available
- A rental company's coverage and claims process may sit behind what looked like a two-car crash
- Getting a straight answer from a distant insurer gets harder every week that passes
What I actually do differently
I keep a small number of cases. That is a choice about capacity rather than a boast: it means the person who answers your first call is the person who argues the case, and that there is no file in my office whose details I would need to look up before talking to you about it.
If your claim does not need a lawyer, I will tell you on that first call. Some weeks I say that several times, and it costs me nothing to say it, because a case that should not be brought helps neither of us.
Questions people in Sarasota ask
Do you only take car accident cases?
Car and motorcycle crashes are most of the work, along with truck and commercial vehicle claims, pedestrian and cyclist cases, and
wrongful death
. If your situation is outside that, I will say so and point you somewhere sensible.I was hurt here but I live out of state. Does that matter?
Not to your right to bring a claim. The crash happened in Florida, so Florida law applies and the case belongs here. It does affect logistics, and most of it can be handled without you travelling.
How soon should I call?
Sooner than feels necessary. Camera footage along the main corridors overwrites within one to two weeks, and the fourteen-day treatment deadline in section 627.736 runs from the day of the crash.
